What Is Water Softener And What Is The Difference Between Soft Water And Hard Water
Water Softener is used to make water soft for washing laundry, cleaning dishes and keep plumbing fixtures function properly. It is not recommended for cooking, drinking and watering plants

What is Hard Water?

The hard water contains large amounts of dissolved calcium, magnesium and other kind of minerals. The minerals cause a film formation on dishes and residue on sanitary fixtures. The hard water can also cause mineral build up in pipes and appliances, which reduces the efficiency, sauch as of heating elements in water heaters. It is also found that hard water reduces the lather of soap and shampoo during showers, and makes laundry stiffer and less vibrant. Water Softener Process

The hardness of water is measured in milligrams per liter (also called as parts per million or ppm) or grains per U.S. gallon (gpg) in a range of 5 classifications:

Classification Hardness Range Per US Gallon
Soft below 17 mg/litre (0-1 grains per U.S. gallon)
Slightly hard 17.1 – 60 mg/litre (1-3.5 gpg)
Moderately hard 61 – 120 mg/litre (3.5 – 7.0 gpg)
Hard 121 – 180 mg/litre (7.0 – 10.5 gpg)
Very hard over 180 mg/litre (10.5 gpg and over)

How To Know About Hard Water?:

There are some signs that can make you notice that the tap water is hard. Tap water which contains a higher concentration of minerals will leave some soap scum behind on sinks and on your bath tubs. The minerals in the water form scale in the washing machines, dishwashers, kettles, water heaters and  the plumbing fixtures. Without proper and regualr maintenance, the efficiency of appliances, such as water greasers tank, will decrease over time due to mineral accumulation.

It is better if you find out the hardness level of your tap water before buying and installing a water softener.

There are some reasons that you may want to buy a water softener:

  • to lower energy consumption by reducing scale build-up in water greasers
  • to reduce the amount of soap consumed
  • to maintain plumbing fixture appearance and functioning
  • to make washing easier by using softened water

Now Understanding Soft Water:

The water is considered as soft water when most of the calcium and magnesium has been removed. The hardness of soft water is below 17 milligrams per liter. Various water softeners will remove hardness entirely, leaving the water without mineral content. Most of the people prefer soft water for taking shower and laundry as it helps creating soap lather. But soft water is not recommended for drinking, cooking and  watering plants.

What Is The Function Of Water Softener? Water Softener System

Most of the water softeners in the market are ion exchange systems. And in these systems, the hardness ions (calcium and magnesium) are exchanged for salt's  (sodium or potassium) ions. The ion exchange taking place in the resin tank of water softener. Whenever water flows through the tank it gets in contact with the small resin beads that are covered with salt ions. During water flow through the resin beads, hardness ions exchange places with salt ions, so the higher salt content in softened water.

Afetr a large volumes of water has softened, the beads become exhausted and contain nothing other than hardness ions . The beads are then recharged by adding bags of salt to the brine tank. Recharging works the same way as softening but in reverse process. The hardness ions exchange places with the salt ions in the brine tank and excess minerals are rinsed out into the waste water drain.

Demand initiated regeneration (DIR) water softeners, meter the water usage over the time and only regenerate whenit is needed. Some softeners operate on a timer or schedule that regenerates at specifically set increments. The older technology may be very wasteful of both salt and water because the softener will regenerate even during periods of low household water use suach as. during vacation away from home. And at the same time, these models can leave you short of soft water if you have periods of higher water use. Clack Water Softener USA

One of the most popular and reliable water softner is from Clack USA. Most people relly on it becuase of its best quality.
